If you built your voiceover workflow on Play.ht, it’s gone. The service shut down December 31, 2025 after Meta acqui-hired the team, and every saved project, voice clone, and API key went with it. Tens of thousands of creators are now looking for a replacement. Stop looking. Just use ElevenLabs.

  • The Pick: ElevenLabs Creator ($22/month) — realistic AI narration, Professional Voice Cloning, commercial license, 121,000 credits (~121 minutes) per month
  • Runner-Up: Murf AI Creator ($19/month annual, $29/month monthly) — better for PowerPoint and Slides workflows, but voice cloning is Enterprise-only ($1,000–5,000+/year)
  • Skip: Canva (design tool with TTS bolted on, 1,000-character cap per generation, no standalone audio export), Speechify Studio (built for consuming content, not creating it), Play.ht (dead — do not use)
  • Cost: $22/month, or $18.33/month on annual billing

Why ElevenLabs

ElevenLabs is the pick because it does one thing better than anyone else at this price: it makes AI voices sound like a real person chose to say those words. For YouTube narration, course modules, or short-form video, that gap in realism is the difference between a viewer staying or bouncing. G2 reviewers (1,181 reviews, 4.5/5 aggregate) consistently describe the output as natural-sounding across extended content — not just short clips.

The Creator tier at $22/month is the minimum plan that makes professional sense. Here’s what matters at that tier:

  • 121,000 credits per month — roughly 121 minutes of generated audio. One credit equals one character of input text. A 90-second short-form script (~225 words, ~1,500 characters) costs about 1,500 credits. A 10-minute YouTube script (~1,500 words, ~9,000 characters) costs about 9,000 credits — that’s 13 such videos per month, which covers a weekly publishing cadence with room to regenerate takes. A 45-minute course module (~6,750 words, ~40,500 characters) costs roughly 40,500 credits, so you can produce three full course modules per month and still have budget left for re-takes.
  • Professional Voice Cloning — you can clone your own voice from a short audio sample, then never sit in front of a microphone again. For best results, record at least 30 minutes of clean audio (low noise floor, consistent mic distance, natural speech) in a quiet room. ElevenLabs recommends lossless or high-bitrate source audio; a $40 USB condenser mic is sufficient. The clone is stable enough for extended narration, not just short clips.
  • 192 kbps audio output — publishable quality directly from the platform. Export as MP3 and drop it straight into Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, or CapCut on the audio track. No re-encoding step required.
  • Commercial license — every paid plan includes full commercial rights. The free plan does not; it prohibits commercial use and requires attribution (a text credit to ElevenLabs, not an audio watermark). Do not publish free-tier audio commercially.

Do not start on the free plan and expect to publish. The free tier (10,000 credits, no commercial license) is for testing voices before you commit. The Starter plan at $6/month adds a commercial license and 30,000 credits — adequate for occasional one-off videos, but not a regular publishing cadence. Creator is the right floor for any creator shipping content weekly.

If you’re migrating from Play.ht, be clear about what you can and cannot recover. Meta deleted all user data when the service shut down — your saved projects, generated audio files, and voice clones are gone. You cannot import them into ElevenLabs. What you can do: if you recorded the source audio you used for Play.ht cloning, use that same recording to create a new Professional Voice Clone on ElevenLabs Creator. If you only have the generated MP3 output (not the original source recording), you’ll need to re-record a fresh cloning sample. Plan for 30–60 minutes of re-setup time.

ElevenLabs is also not a shutdown risk. The company closed a $300 million employee tender offer on September 30, 2026, at a $22 billion valuation — double its February 2026 Series D valuation. This is a scaled business with enterprise contracts and a Stripe billing partnership. It is not a venture-backed experiment that might vanish next year.

One honest limitation: ElevenLabs is a voice generation tool, not a video editor. You export the audio file and drop it into your editor of choice. There is no built-in video timeline. If you need the voiceover synced visually inside your authoring tool, that is Murf’s territory.

Why Not Murf

Murf AI Creator at $19/month annual is a genuinely good product for a specific workflow: if you build presentations in PowerPoint or Google Slides and want voiceover synced to your slide timeline without leaving your authoring environment, Murf’s native integrations make it the cleaner choice. It offers 200+ voices, 24 hours of annual voice generation on the Creator plan, a built-in timeline editor, and a Canva integration.

For everything else — YouTube narration, course audio, podcast-style video, short-form reels — ElevenLabs wins on the metrics that matter most to creators.

The decisive difference is voice cloning. On ElevenLabs, Professional Voice Cloning starts at the Creator tier ($22/month). On Murf, voice cloning is Enterprise-only — custom pricing, a sales conversation, and a contract that typically runs $1,000–5,000+ per year. For a solo creator who wants their own voice narrating their content without recording it themselves, Murf effectively does not offer this feature at any accessible price point.

Voice realism is the second gap. ElevenLabs’ models produce narration that holds up across extended content. Murf is competent for most use cases, but independent reviews flag that highly emotional narration and advertising-grade credibility occasionally show the seams. If you’re producing a course where you need a warm, trustworthy tone across two hours of audio, that gap matters.

If your entire workflow is PowerPoint-first and you have no interest in voice cloning, Murf Creator at $19/month annual is cheaper and purpose-built for that use case. That is the only scenario where Murf beats ElevenLabs for a creator.

Why Not the Rest

Canva has a text-to-speech feature inside its video editor, and it recently added AI voice cloning. Do not mistake this for a voiceover tool. The audio lives inside your Canva design — exporting a standalone MP3 or WAV for use in another editor is awkward and limited. The hard cap is approximately 1,000 characters per generation, which is less than a 90-second script. Voice quality scores around 3/5 in independent comparisons, and customization is limited to speed and pitch adjustments — no SSML, no pronunciation control. Canva is a design tool. Use it for design.

Play.ht is gone. Meta acquired the team in July 2025, shut down new signups in August, took the API offline, and permanently terminated the service on December 31, 2025. The domain does not resolve. If you have any workflow, bookmark, or integration pointing at play.ht, it is broken right now.

Speechify Studio appears in some roundups as a voiceover creation tool, which is technically true but misleading. Speechify’s core product — the one with name recognition — is a text-to-speech reader for consuming documents and articles, not creating content. Studio is a separate product with its own credit system (1 credit = 1 second of audio) and pricing that requires contacting sales for higher tiers. The opaque pricing makes budget planning difficult, and the toolset is clearly secondary to the company’s reader business. ElevenLabs is built from the ground up for creators generating audio; Speechify is built for people consuming it.

When to Revisit

ElevenLabs Creator handles a weekly YouTube cadence comfortably. If you scale to daily publishing or start producing long-form courses with multiple hours of audio per month, check the Pro tier at $99/month for 600,000 credits — that’s roughly 600 minutes of generated audio, or about 60 ten-minute videos. If your team grows and multiple people need access to the same voice library and project workspace, Pro is also the right conversation. For a solo creator publishing one to four videos a week, Creator is the right plan until you have specific evidence you’ve outgrown it.
