ElevenLabs or Speechify

It depends — here’s on what.

ElevenLabs if you produce audio for an audience. Speechify if you consume text with your ears.

  • The Verdict: ElevenLabs if you produce audio for an audience. Speechify if you consume text with your ears.
  • Winner for voice creation: ElevenLabs Creator at $22/mo — professional voice cloning, commercial license, best voice quality on the market
  • Winner for content consumption: Speechify Premium at $11.58/mo (annual) — 200+ voices, 4.5x speed, offline listening, OCR scanning
  • Tied on: Almost nothing — these tools solve fundamentally different problems
  • The mistake to avoid: Buying Speechify Studio to produce voiceovers when ElevenLabs Creator gives you better voice quality for $27 less per month

The Verdict

These are not competitors. ElevenLabs is a voice creation tool — you put text in, other people hear the output. Speechify is a reading tool — you put text in, you hear the output. Buying the wrong one is like hiring a recording studio when you just wanted headphones.

If you make YouTube videos, course narration, podcast intros, or any audio that an audience will hear: use ElevenLabs. Its voice quality tops the Artificial Analysis leaderboard (Eleven v4 at 1,319 Elo, ranked first among all providers as of late September 2026), its commercial licensing is explicit on every paid tier, and Creator at $22/mo is where most solo creators should land.

If you want to consume newsletters, PDFs, research papers, or long articles without staring at a screen: use Speechify. Premium at $11.58/mo (billed $139/year) gives you 200+ HD voices, listening speeds up to 4.5x, offline downloads, and OCR scanning for physical documents. Nothing else in this category comes close for personal reading use.

The only grey area is Speechify Studio — its voice production product. We address that below, but the short answer is: if you care about voice quality for output, Studio trails ElevenLabs and costs more.

When to Use ElevenLabs

You need ElevenLabs when the audio leaves your headphones and reaches an audience. The tool was built for exactly that, and the pricing reflects it.

The free plan gives you 10,000 credits per month but carries zero commercial rights — anything you publish using the free tier is a terms violation. Start paying the moment you plan to publish. Starter at $6/mo unlocks a commercial license and 30,000 credits (~30 minutes of TTS output at standard quality). That’s enough for testing a workflow or producing occasional short content.

Creator at $22/mo is the real tier for working creators. You get 121,000 credits per month, Professional Voice Cloning — which requires about 30 minutes of clean source audio and produces dramatically better clone quality than Instant Voice Cloning — and 192 kbps API output. If you’re producing a weekly YouTube video, a course module, or regular podcast content, this tier handles the volume without overages.

The voice quality case is straightforward: ElevenLabs v4 leads every independent benchmark. Reviewers consistently describe it as the most natural-sounding synthetic voice available, with pronunciation robustness that holds up on technical terminology, foreign names, and long documents without the robotic cadence that still plagues most competitors.

Watch the credit math before committing. If you produce more than Creator’s monthly allocation, you’re either upgrading to Pro at $99/mo (600,000 credits) or paying per-minute overages. Heavy audiobook producers or agencies will hit that ceiling fast. But for a solo creator publishing weekly, Creator is the right tier.

When to Use Speechify

You need Speechify when the problem is your reading backlog, not someone else’s listening experience. Speechify Premium is built around one job: converting text to audio fast so you can consume more content in less time.

At $11.58/mo on the annual plan ($139/year, or $29/mo if you pay monthly), Premium unlocks 200+ HD voices, listening speeds up to 4.5x — the free tier caps at 1.5x, which is the primary reason the free app feels limited — offline listening with downloaded audio, and OCR scanning. Point your phone camera at a printed page and Speechify reads it aloud. Cross-device sync across iOS, Android, Mac, and Chrome means your reading list follows you everywhere.

Speechify expanded significantly in February 2026, repositioning from a read-aloud app into what it calls an “all-in-one voice AI productivity platform.” The expansion added voice typing and dictation, AI-generated podcasts from documents, voice chat, and AI meeting notes. Those features are genuinely useful if you process large amounts of information by ear. The core product — reading your stuff back to you — hasn’t changed; it just has more tools around it now.

For freelancers, solopreneurs, and creators who need to stay on top of industry news, client briefs, or research without adding screen time, that’s the actual pitch. The $11.58/mo annual rate makes it one of the cheaper productivity upgrades available.

The Studio Question

Speechify Studio is a separate product from Speechify Reader, and it matters that you understand the difference before spending money.

Studio is Speechify’s voice production tool — it competes, in theory, with ElevenLabs. Studio Starter runs $19/mo and gives you 7,200 credits (approximately 2 hours of voiceover per month), with voice cloning and commercial rights included. Studio Creator is $49/mo for 28,800 credits (roughly 8 hours).

At $49/mo for Creator-tier Studio, you’re paying $27 more than ElevenLabs Creator for voice quality that independent reviewers consistently rank below ElevenLabs v4. If voice output quality matters — and for anything an audience hears, it does — ElevenLabs Creator at $22/mo is the better production choice. Studio Starter at $19/mo is closer to competitive on price, but the voice realism gap still favors ElevenLabs for professional output.

The only reason to choose Studio over ElevenLabs is if you’re already a heavy Speechify Reader user and want to consolidate everything into one subscription. That’s a convenience argument, not a quality argument.

What They Share

Almost nothing, structurally. Both convert text to audio. Both have free tiers without commercial rights. Both offer voice cloning in their paid tiers — though the implementation and quality differ substantially. ElevenLabs Instant Voice Cloning starts at Starter ($6/mo); Professional Voice Cloning requires Creator ($22/mo). Speechify Studio voice cloning starts at Studio Starter ($19/mo), but Reader Premium has no voice cloning at all.

Neither serves the other’s primary use case well. ElevenLabs has no reading-optimization features: no 4.5x speed playback, no offline sync across devices, no OCR scanning. Speechify Reader has no professional voice production pipeline, no API for developers, and no studio-grade output quality.

If you genuinely need both — producing voiceovers and consuming documents by ear — the math is clean: ElevenLabs Starter at $6/mo handles modest production volume, Speechify Premium at $11.58/mo (annual rate) handles the consumption. That’s $17.58/mo total. If your production volume requires ElevenLabs Creator, the combined cost rises to $33.58/mo — still cheaper than Speechify Studio Creator alone at $49/mo.

What to Skip

Murf AI positions itself as a voiceover studio alternative and starts at $29/mo — more expensive than ElevenLabs Creator with narrower voice variety. For voice production, ElevenLabs beats it on quality and price. For reading consumption, Murf doesn’t compete with Speechify at all.

The broader text-to-speech market is full of tools that do both jobs adequately and neither excellently. If you know what job you’re hiring for — production or consumption — the specialists are better than the generalists at every price point.
